This unique facility for Hospice of Baton Rouge provides a tranquil respite and serves as a safe space for children, teens and adults to learn how to better cope with the process of grief and loss beyond traditional clinical counseling. The mandate for a peaceful, reflective program is juxtaposed with the site’s location – directly off a major interstate overpass. The architects thoughtfully arranged the buildings to “circle the wagons,” turning the building’s backs to the interstate to protect the quiet within. Roofs were pitched to further deflect the noise while simultaneously opening up the space inside the building to natural light. Parking and landscaping located between the buildings and the interstate further buffers interstate noise. All buildings and site features radiate off a central fountain and butterfly garden.
